However, Holly withdrew after lap 3 due to a very regrettable bout of Deerstalker belly, which was a great shame and hugely unexpected as our nutrition in the run up to this was a million times better than Deerstalker. Until that time, devoted blog readers, stay classy! As I said, I caught up with Tom at Hang Time but he gracefully completed it where I did a controlled dive into the icy water below and did my penalty loop. Anyway, enough of the obstacles and back to the race. We set ourselves up to race, laid out energy bars and isotonic drinks in preparation for speedy stops until 11pm struck. Tom and I were both hell-bent on getting the 25 mile patch so we headed back out. Regardless, we had a nice enough time getting through the rest of the course and having a good laugh at the same time, all in all making for a lovely way to start a Sunday morning… given the context!

Regardless, we had a nice enough time getting through the rest of the course and having a good laugh at the same time, all in all making for a lovely way to start a Sunday morning… given the context! Some were bringing their stuff into the venue at 11pm. I was expecting to be utterly broken, having just run the best part of a marathon of Tough Mudder course, mostly being wet and muddy in the cold midnight drizzle of the English Midlands but truth be told, I was dopey from having been awake for 20 hours and my knees were a bit sore but otherwise I was alarmingly fine. Turns out I enjoy being tested and rising to those challenges — who knew?! Interesting to learn that there were two separate courses, an A and a B and they shifted from one to another about halfway through… and it was harder. I failed Hang Time Tarzan swing on a pole to a diagonal rope you shimmy down on purpose after my first attempt as I wanted to save grip strength for later more achievable ones. As I said, I caught up with Tom at Hang Time but he gracefully completed it where I did a controlled dive into the icy water below and did my penalty loop. No going back now. People who started lining up their cars at 9: The purpose of this recap is many fold: I think there were about competitors due to start and each on average with one person in the pit providing support. So, Tough Mudder has set the challenge of completing one of each of these events in the same calendar year to prove yourself to yourself and indeed to the world and in return you get a Holy Grail seems fair. All obstacles were open by 1am, but certain obstacles like Kiss-of-Mud at mile 4 were open for almost all competitors whereas others like Blockness Monster at mile 2 opened at On the strategy for running the first loop, which is an open sprint with no obstacles. Anyway, the decision to walk also meant I did it with someone I met at the stream crossing. Although, the minimum requirement to complete and qualify for Holy Grail is less I. Lap 3 I think was hardest as it was cold dark and rainy so was arguably the least enjoyable part for most competitors. It was towards the end of this lap where I felt my body letting go ever so slightly and, had it not been for my resolve, it would have been oh so easy to cash in at this point. Anyway, enough of the obstacles and back to the race. They opened the gates at 9: I led for lap 4 but Tom had a splash-and-dash pit stop, whereas I took a bit more time to do some mild stretching. After some initial changing and bag sorting at the car we went to register and set up at our pit lane. As mentioned before, it would have been very easy to quit at the end of every lap, especially as the night grew darker, colder and wetter. Quite the experience and what a great way to start such a unique to me anyway event. Fortunately, it turns out I love being tested both physically and mentally so I just set my thunder-thighs to autopilot, gritted my teeth and went along for the ride as I had a target and damned if that was going to be rained off!

  1. Though I was initially disheartened and frankly angry at myself, I soon came to realise that revealing weaknesses is good and gives me purpose and tangible objectives in training going forward. The final half mile looms and I coerce myself into a very staggery run for the last couple of obstacles.

  2. As more time goes by since the event, the more fondly I look back at it. People who started lining up their cars at 9:
